Day 156, back alley delights
To round off the parochial trip around the stalwart city of Sheffield let's look at the stinking backside. This could be anywhere off the beaten track, anywhere around the world, save for the recognisable European architecture.
Black Swan Walk, an historical remnant along with Chapel Walk that hints at the street pattern from medieval times. If you'd been lead here blindfold from Mars, and had some pre-existing knowledge of architecture of the UK, you might think that you were in York.
The air-con units at the back of the shops on Chapel walk filling the alley with a sticky, heavy fug.
The delightful collection of commercial waster receptacles, with waste accurately deposited to within three or four metres of the container openings. A lovely example of business effluvia can be seen gently slushing its way into the gutter.
Some old and rickety stuff and some handy, informational notices.
"THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO ACCESS VIA HAIRBAND TO THE STREET LEVEL SHOPS. THE FLOOR IN BETWEEN IS CONCRETE AND NO CASH OR VALUABLES ARE KEPT ON HAIRBAND PREMISES."
"WARNING SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS IN OPERATION WITH 24 HOUR RECORDING"
The building to the far right in the picture below has stained glass behind the horizontal grille. What must that have been in a previous existence.
And the view back out again. Pity this isn't a thoroughfare as it definitely would add character to the centre of the city if tidied up and made palatable.
Or it could be the location for the modern equivalent of the cutpurse and footpad to tackle their victims.
I bet this is on one of the ghost walks. In fact it is reputed to have been one of the places where Mary Queen of Scots passed through briefly when on transit from Sheffield Castle. Her ghost has been know to patrol the area complaining about the parlous state it is in and proclaiming that this never used to happen in Scotland.
Much of that last paragraph may not be true.
