Day 112, Ukrainian sardines

Ukrainian sardines are not subject to the same rectilinear restriction that UK sardines are.

They arrive, nose to tail (do they have noses), in one of these circular tins.  Wrapped around tightly.  Or at least they did in the 1990s.  A quick Google finds the same brand with a slightly different label design.

Sardines, sprats, pilchards, what's the difference?

What's the relevance of the pine cones and the French book of matches?  There wasn't one I was aware of until a moment ago when the connection became clear.

I will now have a glass of whisky to toast those no longer with us.
